Pakistan still loses far too many mothers to causes that antenatal care catches early. If you're pregnant, these visits are not a formality — they are the safety net.

The schedule (WHO 2016 model)

  • First visit (before 12 weeks): confirm pregnancy, blood group, hemoglobin (anemia is extremely common), urine test, BP, blood sugar, hepatitis B/C screening. Start folic acid — ideally you started before conceiving.
  • Middle visits (20–32 weeks): growth checks, anomaly ultrasound around 20 weeks, screening for gestational diabetes, tetanus vaccination per schedule, iron/calcium supplementation.
  • Final stretch (36+ weeks): position of the baby, birth plan, and deciding where you will deliver — with a skilled birth attendant, always.

Danger signs at ANY stage — go to hospital immediately

  • Bleeding, or fluid leaking before time
  • Severe headache, blurred vision, or swelling of face/hands (possible pre-eclampsia)
  • Fits, severe abdominal pain, or high fever
  • Baby's movements stopping or clearly reducing

Small things with big effects

Iron + folic acid daily (anemia makes delivery dangerous), tetanus vaccination, and an ultrasound-confirmed due date so decisions late in pregnancy are made on facts.
